Arcos Learning Abroad - Spain
Program Overview

Study abroad in the historical city of Santiago de Compostela, Spain located in Galica province in Spain's Northwest corner. It is home to the incredible Santiago Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece with construction dating back to 1074. The old city center, with its winding cobblestone streets and many hidden plazas, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Santiago is famous as the final destination point of the Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James. It is also home to the University of Santiago de Compostela, one of Spain’s top 3 universities dating to the 1500s. The program includes tuition, housing with a homestay or in a residence hall, excursions, cultural activities, insurance and a dedicated resident staff. Surrounded by mountains Santiago is only minutes away from Spain’s striking Atlantic coastline making this an ideal location for study abroad and exploring a unique and fascinating part of the world!


Academic Offering

The summer Medical Spanish and Clinical Practice program is aimed at pre-Medicine and Nursing students wishing to acquire specific linguistic knowledge in the area of Health Sciences, both at the written and oral production level. All students enroll in 6 credits of academic and practical coursework.

  • Health and welfare. The Spanish Healthcare System. Public/private medicine.
  • The human body. Medical specialities.
  • Healthcare centers and the context of patient care.
  • Psychology and human relations in medical care.
  • Medicine without borders (medicine in resource-poor countries and countries affected by infectious diseases).
  • Public healthcare campaigns.
  • Reviewing and expanding on grammatical structures and vocabulary in accordance with students' Spanish level.
  • Lectures by experts from the Faculty of Medicine and The Galician Health Care System.
Clinical practice:
  • Students get in contact with real-life professional contexts. 
  • Provides an overview of this medical profession in Spain.
  • Allows students to obtain first-hand knowledge about the Spanish Healthcare System.
  • Students carry out supervised medical practice in a hospital or healthcare center
  • Students get involved in different daily tasks at a healthcare facility
  • Accompany doctors or nurses during hospital visits and consultations.
  • arcos spain 4Student progress will be supervised by a tutor in coordination with the Head of the healthcare center they are assigned to.
