Sustainable Tourism

This two-week experiential program provides students with the opportunity to conduct hands-on research field work and service-learning projects while studying sustainability throughout North Queensland. Known as the Sunshine State, Queensland is home to the Daintree Rainforest (a World Heritage Site), Outback scrub and desert, and the spectacular marine diversity of the Great Barrier Reef (another World Heritage Site).

This program travels to the stunning national parks, forests, wildlife reserves, coastlines, and islands of North Queensland under the guidance of local experts. In this active and engaging itinerary, here are a few highlights:
Magnetic Island, a beautiful island with stunning beaches and abundant wildlife including a large population of koalas. You will study and hike the terrestrial landscapes with a local ranger, and have a free day to further explore the island.
You will then travel to an eco-retreat on the edge of the Outback to learn about sustainable business in rural Australia as well as walk to the red-rock Running River Gorge for a swim and look for platypus in the wild.
Spend the day with Indigenous people in Mission Beach to learn about the Nywaigi Aboriginal People, perhaps try your hand at throwing a boomerang, and assist with a service-learning project.
Stay on a local farm and get to know personally an Australian family to collect ethnographic data on their way of life and worldview.
Snorkel on the Great Barrier Reach, participating in an ongoing Citizen Science research project on the health of the reef and impact of reef management strategies.
Visit a scientific research center in the heart of the Daintree Rainforest, to collect data on native trees and ride to the top of the canopy in a research gondola, of which there are only 7 in the world. Compare the rainforest in the daytime to what you see on a guided evening night-spotting walk.
