Location / Housing

Fukuoka City, the home of Seinan Gakuin and a metropolis of 1,300,000 people, is in the northern region of Kyushu. SGU is located in Nishijin and Momochihama, a sub-center of the city. In recent years, this area has become known for its concentration of communication, business, and commercial enterprises, along with cultural and sports facilities such as the Fukuoka Dome, the Fukuoka City Public Library, and the Fukuoka City Museum.

The International House, called the “I-House,” opened in February 2004.  I-House allows foreign students and researchers to live together with Japanese students, experiencing intercultural exchange and broadening understanding of other cultures through daily living. There are 55 rooms for single students. The I-House offers single rooms for productive study, and communication lounges and a broad terrace for social interaction. A Japanese student advisor on each floor assists foreign students in daily life creating an environment where students from many lands can help each other, interact, and grow together.

Seinan Gakuin Univeristy also offers a limited number of homestays in Japanese families. The family will welcome you as a member of the family and you will experience the culture, customs and life-style of Japan and also of Fukuoka.  The homestays are arranged by JFIE (Japan Foundation for Intercultural Exchange), which promotes better understanding of peoples of different cultures and global education for the people in the 21st century.

Academics

Students may select courses they are interested in from the wide variety SGU offers. Four levels of Japanese language instruction are available, with students placed into beginning, pre-intermediate, intermediate or advanced courses based on pre-admission testing.  Except for advanced Japanese, language classes meet for 90-minute periods per week. In addition to classroom study, off-campus activities such as trips to museums and cultural and government facilities are also common, helping foreign students gain a deeper understanding of Japanese culture.
